The Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies bears most probably the longest name of any graduate school not only within Kyoto University, but perhaps at any Japanese university. The long title is the result of the tying together of three key concepts: “Asia,” “Africa,” and “Area Studies.” It is a title that fairly reflects the composition of the graduate school, but it certainly amounts to a difficult mouthful in everyday parlance. Accordingly, the name in Japanese is shortened to “AA Graduate School” while in English, the School is referred by the acronym ASAFAS.
