アフリカの在来農業における生産性と持続性について、栽培にかかわる技術体系を農学的に解析すると同時に、その自然環境や他の生業との相互関係について研究してきた。また、近代農業が在来農業に及ぼす影響を解析しながら、外来の生業が伝統的な農村社会のなかでどのように解釈され、位置付けられてゆくのかを探る。
