 研究課題：
東南アジアにおける土地・水資源管理
食糧自給と環境保全はともに21世紀に向けた地球レベルの課題である。両者は、ミクロには農家経営や地域経済の自立的発展において、マクロには生物多様性保護や地球温暖化防止、国際的な食糧交易において対立する局面をもつにもかかわらず、両者を統一的に分析・評価するための理論や手法はまだ開発されていない。タイ国東北部を対象として、土地生産力評価と環境合理性をキーとしてこの課題に取り組んできた。臨地モニタリングと作物モデル、地理情報システムを組み合わせた天水農業の土地生産力を地域レベルで評価するための基本的な手法を開発した。また大規模な臨地調査を円滑にかつ効率的に実施するために、多数の大学院生を長期間、現地調査に従事させるとともに、カウンターパートであるコンケン大学内にプロジェクトオフィスを設置し有効に活用してきている。さらに研究対象地域をベトナム北部山地やラオス北部にも拡大し、地形や土壌などより多様な環境ストレスを考慮した総合的な土地評価の構築を目指している。さらに、開発された土地生産力評価を、農業・環境問題のみならず、農村開発、農村社会、居住史研究等、はば広い分野に応用する方向での研究も進めている。
