: : FY2004 Field Station Annual Report
South Asia
  (1) Research Activity:
A field station has not yet been established in the South Asia area. This is due to the fact that the research sites of faculty members and graduate students are widely dispersed across the region, and that there would be little benefit to establishing an FS. However, the necessary facilities for their studies are accommodated by Dr. B Mohapatra, a former ASAFAS visiting professor, at Jawaharlal Nehru University, which substitutes for the functions of an FS. No students were dispatched with 21st Century COE funding, but four students have been conducting research in South Asia using non-COE funding sources.

  (2) Dispatch of Faculty Members:
TANABE Akio (ASAFAS faculty member): Conducted research consultations on "contemporary trends in Hindu beliefs and ascetic practices" at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar and at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, and engaged in fieldwork in the surrounding areas (July 17- September 8, 2004).

ADACHI Akira: (ASAFAS faculty member): Conducted research on the process-documentation method of participatory development scheme in Sri Lanka (March 13-24, 2004).
