Conservation and sustainable use of
tropical forests in Africa |
Contents : |
This Field Station will undertake education
and research in the forests of Southeast Cameroon, with
a comparative view of other forest areas in Africa. In
the research, man and nature relationships in the forest
are examined in ecological, historical, economic and political
contexts, with particular emphases on hunting-gathering,
sustainable agriculture, local exchange systems, inter-ethnic
power relations. The relationship of these activities
to economic and political systems of a broader world is
also analyzed. Based on these, positive recommendations
will be made concerning sustainable agricultural and hunting
systems, the relationship between environmental conservation
and the rights of local residents, multi-ethnic co-existence,
etc. |

Creation of multidimensional symbiotic
society in North East Africa and the role of area studies |
Contents : |
North East Africa is distinct in the
great diversity of its nature, culture and society. This
Field Station will identify the structure of the people's
livelihoods under this environment through area studies
undertaken jointly with local researchers and residents.
With a focus on Ethiopia, which experienced three different
political systems in the past 50 years, and looking at
socio-ecological history, the Field Station will study
the transformation of conventional technologies, utilization
and preservation of resources, and occupations of people
involved in the "development" process, thereby contributing
to the building of a multidimensional symbiotic society
in the 21st century. |

Social changes and the transformation of
subsistence economy in East African arid region |
Contents : |
Pastoral communities in East Africa, which
occupy arid regions, have been seen as being far from
"modern" so far. However, due to the spread of the market
economy, implementation of development programs, spread
of school education and Christianity and the penetration
of the state's administration, those communities are undergoing
rapid transformation. Coupling quantitative analysis of
subsistence activities and residents' resource usage with
the study of the social, economic and political factors
of the transformation, the Field Station will study and
clarify the process of transformation and the dynamics
of the pastoral societies through interdisciplinary researches
between social and natural sciences. |

Biological resource utilization and
local communities in Laos |
Contents : |
Laos is one the few areas in South East
Asia where a rich natural environment still remains. The
area is also very important in terms of preserving biological
diversity on a global scale. As such, strong international
pressure exists for the preservation of biological resources,
and their usage is strictly regulated, in a way that will
drastically change the occupations and livelihoods of
the local residents. Conflicts are emerging between the
policy taken from a global perspective and local ecosystems.
The Laos Field Station will, based on field research,
study the relationship between the utilization of biological
resources and local communities, which is now facing a
major change. |

Understanding Everyday Experiences of
the State in Malaysia |
Contents : |
In Malaysia the state involvement in
everyday life of the people has been reinforced since
the New Economic Policy (NEP), generally called the Bumiputra
policy, was launched in 1971. The everyday life here includes
the people's or communities' daily practices regarding,
for instance, the births and deaths, meals and clothing,
languages and communications, "traditional" economic activities
such as farming and fishing, or religious beliefs and
rituals. How has the state through its institutions committed
itself to these daily practices? How have the people as
actors reorganized their daily practices while reacting
to the state commitment? These are the general topics
with which the students and staffs of Kuala Lumpur F ield
Station are concerned. The field station renders the facilities
to the students and staffs who conduct fieldwork and to
the staffs who engage in on-site education for their students,
while all of its members try to promote the academic cooperation
with ATMA. It also plans to make electronic databases
regarding the above-mentioned topics. The Field Station
covers Singapore as well. |

team will be formed together with researchers and graduate
students from the University of Yangon, Center for Research
on Myanmar History, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation,

Field Station will undertake holistic and basic research
on farming villages as a joint study in the areas of ecology
and environment, primarily in the Rakhine State and Irrawaddy
Delta. An office will be established in SEAMEO-CHAT for
the joint study, permanently staffed by a COE junior researcher,
who will organize holistic joint researches and regular
study sessions. The study themes will include the socio-economic
structure of rural communities, local administration and
rural communities, changes in land use, water usage and
environmental problems, utilization of ecological resources,
transformation of forestry, and agricultural technologies.
Topographies, local literatures, statistics and other
basic documents for the field work from the time of the
British era shall be gathered and made available, so that
the data collection and analysis can be completed on site,

Transformation and linkages of social,

In mid-1980s, Tanzania introduced a structural
adjustment program, and under it liberalized its economy.
In the early 1990s, a multi-party system was restored
and administrative reforms in the form of decentralization
were promoted. Globalization has compelled the country
to undertake various reforms at the national level, which
brought about social and economic transformation at the
local level, even affecting the natural environment. Field

Socio-economic change in southern African
countries and its impact on environment and the life of
rural people |
Contents : |
Among Sub-Saharan African countries, those
of southern Africa occupies a unique position in that
the life of local people and environment are in drastic
change through penetration of monetary economy by the
big capitals from South Africa, which means marginalization
as well as involvement for rural societies. Currently,
policies are being implemented with a focus on promoting
participatory sustainable development designed to protect
nature and local residents. With the view that such protectionisms
of rural minority and environment underlies the development
theory in Africa today, the Field Station will focus on
studying the structure of development-oriented practices
in which state organizations, change in rural life and
