Theme : Social changes and the transformation of subsistence economy in East African arid region
Contents : Pastoral communities in East Africa, which occupy arid regions, have been seen as being far from "modern" so far. However, due to the spread of the market economy, implementation of development programs, spread of school education and Christianity and the penetration of the state's administration, those communities are undergoing rapid transformation. Coupling quantitative analysis of subsistence activities and residents' resource usage with the study of the social, economic and political factors of the transformation, the Field Station will study and clarify the process of transformation and the dynamics of the pastoral societies through interdisciplinary researches between social and natural sciences.

Theme : Biological resource utilization and local communities in Laos
Contents : Laos is one the few areas in South East Asia where a rich natural environment still remains. The area is also very important in terms of preserving biological diversity on a global scale. As such, strong international pressure exists for the preservation of biological resources, and their usage is strictly regulated, in a way that will drastically change the occupations and livelihoods of the local residents. Conflicts are emerging between the policy taken from a global perspective and local ecosystems. The Laos Field Station will, based on field research, study the relationship between the utilization of biological resources and local communities, which is now facing a major change.

Country : Malaysia
Leader : ISHIKAWA Noboru
Theme : Understanding Everyday Experiences of the State in Malaysia
Contents : In Malaysia the state involvement in everyday life of the people has been reinforced since the New Economic Policy (NEP), generally called the Bumiputra policy, was launched in 1971. The everyday life here includes the people's or communities' daily practices regarding, for instance, the births and deaths, meals and clothing, languages and communications, "traditional" economic activities such as farming and fishing, or religious beliefs and rituals. How has the state through its institutions committed itself to these daily practices? How have the people as actors reorganized their daily practices while reacting to the state commitment? These are the general topics with which the students and staffs of Kuala Lumpur F ield Station are concerned. The field station renders the facilities to the students and staffs who conduct fieldwork and to the staffs who engage in on-site education for their students, while all of its members try to promote the academic cooperation with ATMA. It also plans to make electronic databases regarding the above-mentioned topics. The Field Station covers Singapore as well.
